My husband and I love to jet-ski. Most weekends you'll find us on the ICW spotting dolphins, hanging with friends on the sand bar, and catching live music vibes at local waterside restaurants. But all of that came to a screeching halt. At first, the issue was the jet ski was loosing speed. So my husband poured over some online forums to figure out the issue. We bought and installed new spark plugs, and took the jet ski for a test ride. It didn't fix it. He talked to a mechanic friend and they came up with some other ideas. Now it's been 3 weeks without time on the water as we wait for the parts to arrive. While I'm not a mechanic, I do know you have to diagnose the problem before you can find a solution. In a similar way, the cause (of your marriage and sex problems) has to be accurately identified before you can find the most helpful solution. Let’s be real. There was nothing glamorous about it. Through the cold, threat of motion sickness, and fog for -50 miles out at sea- the whole experience could have gone south at any moment. There was a very real chance that even after all of this effort and perseverance, we would never see a single, solitary whale. Those are tough odds. You have to know you really want something to stay motivated and committed. You have to have already decided, that you are 'all in' and willing to do whatever it takes. That may sound like heavy language to describe a bucket list trip to Maine and a day of a whale watching. So let’s see how whale watching is like something else that requires motivation, commitment, and a perseverance, so strong that even the fog of confusion can’t stop you. Talking. About. Sex. Yep, these are the similar things- -In delicate talks, it takes a lot of effort to get to the starting place. -In marriage, you could have your best communication skills at hand and some big distraction will interfere. -When navigating touchy subjects like sex, if you don’t see immediate results you may doubt that your talk is working. -While trying to communicate all the detailed things like sex drives, preferences, and past hurts… if you don’t stay with it through the fog and confusion, you might miss seeing the benefits. I believe that if you keep your vision fresh (successful open talks about sex), you will be so relieved and pleased when it goes well. Have you ever gone away for a fabulous vacation? Our recent trip to Maine was absolutely amazing. We loved whale watching and meandering down the coast to explore colorful harbors. But the food… it deserves its own category (especially our friend’s private dinner!!) We tried lobster and blueberries in more new ways than I thought possible. And now- I need to get back to my non-splurge type of eating. I need to revamp my healthy food habits. Rebuilding a lifestyle of good-for-you choices doesn’t happen automatically. You have to find the adaptations that work well for you and a starting place to make it realistic. But here’s the thing, rebuilding your intimacy after emotional disconnection and sexual hurt also requires a starting place. I think a couple needs to be friends and actually enjoy being together before they will ever want to work on their marriage. That’s why I encourage small acts of kindness to begin rebuilding. When you start by refilling your Love tank (like with Love Languages), you’re creating a foundation that says, I want the best for you. That way you’re on the same side and no one is the enemy.
